What to expect at Neon Insights
Specialist workers from Neon Creations will shine a light on what neon actually is, speaking with visitors about the core differences between true neon and modern interpretations of neon, and the value traditional neon offers in the modern market.
Those in attendance will also be able to view live demonstrations of how the team at Neon Creations brings neon to life, including the different types of glass bending and how expert staff are able to create intricate shapes and letters.
There will also be the opportunity for visitors to try their hand at neon bending – under the supervision of Neon Creations staff – to gain further insight into the level of skill required to create this iconic signage.
Meet the experts
Tony Spink
Co-founder and glass bender, Neon Creations
Tony has been a neon glass bender for over 35 years, learning his craft as an apprentice with Pearce Signs in London. Tony moved to Manchester in 2001 and worked for Wholesale Neon before setting up Neon Creations with wife Catherine in 2005.
Tony is hugely passionate about neon glass bending and often says it is his hobby rather than his job. As well as the neon projects he works on for Neon Creations, he also has produced a number of neon artworks under the name of ‘Neon Tony’.
Catherine Spink
Co-founder, Neon Creations
Catherine and Tony set up Neon Creations in 2005 after Tony became frustrated about not being able to use his creative ideas. Catherine’s background was in marketing, and she had always wanted to run her own business, so saw it as the perfect opportunity.
Like Tony, Catherine is committed to protecting the heritage of neon glass bending, which is currently an endangered craft in the UK. The pair are fronting a campaign to protect this via legislation.
Sam Beresford
Glass bender, Neon Creations
Sam joined the Neon Creations team in February 2012 as a 16-year-old trainee neon glass bender. Under the guidance of Tony, she has become not only a highly competent glass bender, but also one of the youngest in the UK.
